My daughter and husband spent the afternoon today at a coding workshop for kids by @clchfx so this little mister and I got some quality time in at the Central Library. We read lots of Splat the Cat, made a bracelet at the crafternoon, and played with LEGO. Now that he’s on the same schedule as his sister in big school we rarely get this kind of time alone any more so it’s pretty special. We’re going to meet up with the other half of the “team” and celebrate the first day of March Break with dinner somewhere fun. How are you spending your Saturday?
“Dear boys and girls, today is Tuesday. We have library and music today We are going to make hearts. Love Mr, Rushton.” Well we are kicking off March Break today and have a full week of fun planned for the kids around Halifax ... but I have a feeling my sweet primary student is going to miss his teacher and classmates a wee bit. He loves playing school and writing a Morning Message to “his class”. Perhaps he will combine his plans to be an artist with his love of teaching and be an art teacher?? Oh the places he will go ... What are your March Break plans, fellow Haligonians? Are you doing the staycation bit or heading off somewhere?
I was the best pitcher in my neighbourhood growing up. After school all the kids would gather in our friend Eddie’s yard and play ball. I was always chosen to be the pitcher cause I could throw a mean fastball. ⚾️ At the time this was the only option for me, as a girl growing up in the 80s, to play ball. There were no girls baseball teams in my area and no way I was brave enough to play with the boys. Fast forward to today and I know so many little girls who play baseball every summer and so today I’m putting the spotlight on seven-year-old Clara Parker of Dartmouth (seen in this image) who just finished the winter session of the first all-girls baseball league in Nova Scotia with @canadiangirlsbaseball and is gearing up for the second summer session. My five year old son has started saying lately that he wants to be an artist when he grows up, just like his sister. 🎨 In a world where almost every other boy in his class wants to be a hockey player or a firefighter, I felt like he needed a little extra reassurance that being an artist was a very cool goal. Being a feminist mom, to me, is raising your girls AND boys to understand and respect the role of women in our world and to also crush male-female stereotypes like the parasites they are. To encourage my sensitive boy’s love of art we planned a visit to the @artgalleryns and they were both captivated by so many of the works, including this incredible exhibit at the @artgalleryns by Jordan Bennett called KETU'ELMITA'JIK. On another note, we are deep into planning our first March Break with two kids in school (T-minus one week folks!). We will be spending most of it in #downtownhalifax taking in all the sights and will likely be back here again to explore some more and check out some of their March Break fun including sketching in the gallery and art camps! Today is Dr Seuss’s birthday and It’s a good reminder to read to your kids daily.📚 When my daughter was a baby (see above photo 😍) I thought it would be fun to read my favourite childhood books aloud to her. The first one I chose was Charlotte’s Web. Before I finished the first few pages though I was sobbing through my post-partum hormones about Pa going out to kill the pig with his ax. I was sure I’d scarred my baby forever, exposing her to this horror right off the bat 😂😂 Now, in the blink of an eye, she’s in grade two and just finished reading Charlotte’s Web at school herself and absolutely loved it 🐖🕷🕸🥰 (and doesn’t seem to have been at all scarred by that earlier experience lol). Time flies friends. Read (age appropriate 😂) books to your kids as often as you can. And, FYI, Dr Seuss is always age-appropriate 😉
BK (before kids) my husband and I travelled a lot. In fact, we went on our first trip together to Europe less than five months after our first date 👀 But AK (after kids) we have only done a couple weekends away together and some family road trip vacations (but no further than QC or New England). Our tenth wedding anniversary is coming up this spring however and I think we are due a trip somewhere fun. My husband wants to surprise me with the destination - I’m not so sure I’m able to hand over that much control 🙈 Has someone ever surprised you with a trip? *** This photo is a #tbt from a trip to Portland, Oregon in 2010 which was so much fun.
We love Maud Lewis’ artwork in our home and I was so happy to hear that she is being honoured for Heritage Day weekend this year. Her charming folk style art is accessible to all ages and has inspired many works of art by my own two budding artists. Did you know her actual painted house (the WHOLE house) lives in the @artgalleryns now? It’s one of the best ways to bring her works to life with kids. PS We have two Maud Lewis inspired activities - one greeting card and one cookie house one - that you can do with kids this weekend.
