Family SOS in Halifax Offers Free Programs for Local Families

Raising a family is one of the most important jobs you will ever do, but it's also one of the hardest! Luckily in Halifax we are home to an incredible local organization called Family SOS. They are there to help support all local families during their journeys AND they also run some pretty cool activities for kids and youth - and it's all free! Today we shine a spotlight on this organization and some of the amazing programs they offer to help local families.

The Story Behind the IWK 5K: In Memory of Jessica

The Story Behind the IWK 5K: In Memory of Jessica

This annual community event is more than a really fun fundraiser for the IWK, it’s a way for one family to heal and give back, and for other families to find support and share their stories. Jennifer Manuel, the organizer and Jessica’s mother, shared the story of the origin of the event with us and how you and your family can help give back too.

Halifax's Ronald McDonald House PJ Walk: Volunteering as a Family

Halifax's Ronald McDonald House PJ Walk: Volunteering as a Family

One of the questions I am asked a lot is how local families with young children can volunteer together to teach their children from early on how to give back to their communities. The Ronald McDonald House in Halifax is hosting a super fun, all-ages PJ Walk that the whole family can get involved in! Last year the Halifax Ronald McDonald House provided 4,887 nights of comfort to 553 families travelling here for medical treatment; and, between the RMH House in Halifax and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms in Halifax and Moncton, they served 2,283 Maritime families.

Ten Ideas for Earth Day Resolutions

Ten Ideas for Earth Day Resolutions

It can be easy to forget the the Earth is in crisis on beautiful blue-sky, sunny days, or crisp, colourful autumn mornings, but the truth is unavoidable. Big change needs to happen ... but big change starts with helping the smallest people on the planet understand the issue and build good Earth-friendly habits into their life from an early age.

Valentines for Veterans

Valentines for Veterans

Valentines for Veterans is a special way to help your children show their appreciation for some important members of our community.

The purpose of the program is to have community members send a Valentine to a Veteran to show our appreciation and thanks for their sacrifices, but it's also a great opportunity to take those conversations we had on Remembrance Day and put them into something more concrete and give some love to others in our community.

Cuso International, Helping Mothers Around the World: Giving Back

Cuso International, Helping Mothers Around the World: Giving Back

I had a lot of fear about childbirth from the moment I found out I was pregnant with Miss M. When the time finally came, I discovered that, unfortunately, my fears were not unfounded.

Her birth was a very long, traumatic ordeal with several touch-and-go moments. Right after she was born, she started having significant breathing problems and ended up being whisked to the NICU.

Now, because of the care she received during my labour and delivery, and in the NICU post-birth, she's a happy and healthy six year old.

Other mothers aren't so lucky though.

I recently learned about Cuso International, a charity that sends trained Canadian medical volunteers around the world to make pregnancy and delivery safer for moms with their Maternal Health program.

Tinsel, Sackville's Talking Christmas Tree

Sackville filled the talking tree void left by Woody a few years ago with Tinsel. He puts on a fun animatronic twenty minute show with sing-a-longs and storytelling that the children adore. The show is free to all, though food or monetary donations to Beacon House are encouraged. His shows start this weekend and run for just a few days so read on so you don't miss his visit this year!

How to Give Back with a Litter Scavenger Hunt

How to Give Back with a Litter Scavenger Hunt

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a parent, it’s that if you call something a scavenger hunt, kids will go crazy for it. No joke. Cleaning up toys, finding groceries in the store, even picking up garbage! We've come up with a fun way for little kids to clean up their neighbourhood AND help other kids learn about the environment.
