Baby Registry Celebration Provides Resources for New Parents in Halifax

Parenthood is the most incredible job, but it also has the biggest learning curve in the world. You can prepare all you want but, until you're in the thick of things, you won't know exactly what support you will need or who you can contact for help. buybuy BABY recognized that challenge when they recently hosted a Baby Registry Celebration and so they gathered up a group of industry experts to connect with expecting parents to help prepare them for the big event…and the days following.

Halifax's Ultimate Parent and Tot Resource Guide

Halifax's Ultimate Parent and Tot Resource Guide

One of the most important things for new parents to do is to connect with other new parents, ideally in person. It motivates you to get out of the house, it builds a support system, and it provides a space to make friends with other people in the same stage of life. This “living” guide will be your go-to resource as we keep growing it and adding more and more programs so you’ll always have options when you’re ready to “get out there.” Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

Nova Scotia Children's Fashion Guide Featuring Seven Local Makers

Nova Scotia Children's Fashion Guide Featuring Seven Local Makers

Did you know there are businesses in Nova Scotia who create gorgeous clothes out of beaitiful soft organic fabrics, design completely recyclable clothing (FROM recycled content), make apparel that adjusts for your kids getting bigger, share their proceeds to feed the less fortunate around the world, and build knee pads right into their cute pants for busy kids? I was thrilled to discover so many innovative and eco-conscious - yet still stylish - apparel for kids being developed right here in our home province.

I've loved working on this guide and learning about all of these businesses and I am excited to share seven of them with you today.

Baby Registry Must-Have Items for 2018

Baby Registry Must-Have Items for 2018

Creating a baby registry is one of those things many expecting parents start thinking about early on but it can be overwhelming to actually get the process started. There are a lot of major decisions to make while you create the registry, such as what you want your sleeping situation to look like with a newborn, what type of stroller you will need, what your feeding plan will be . . . basically SO.MANY.DECISIONS.

I recently sat down with Melissa, one of the baby registry team members at the new buybuy BABY store, which is located in Bayers Lake in Halifax, to talk about baby registries and she showed us some of her top picks for new parents

How To Make a Halifax Mom Friend

How To Make a Halifax Mom Friend

Making a mom friend is not an easy task, and when you're new to a community - or even just new to being a mom! - it can be even harder. Navigating new social waters at the best of times can be challenging but throw in a kid or two and it can be damn near impossible to build bonds with other people when you can't even finish a sentence because your kid has a mouthful of dirt or your 18 month old is suddenly at the top of a six foot ladder.

In Halifax we have a reputation for being friendly but I've heard time and time again from new moms to the area (or even lifelong Haligonians who are new to being moms) who tell me that Halifax can be a hard place to make REAL friends.

The Top Baby Names in Nova Scotia for 2017 (and if they should matter when choosing a name)

The Top Baby Names in Nova Scotia for 2017 (and if they should matter when choosing a name)

I love a good list and I especially love a top baby name list! I've always been a name nerd and I love watching the trends on naming babies change - or stay stable - through the years. Today the list of top baby names was released and I have some thoughts on how it should, or should not, affect your baby naming decision process.

Cuso International, Helping Mothers Around the World: Giving Back

Cuso International, Helping Mothers Around the World: Giving Back

I had a lot of fear about childbirth from the moment I found out I was pregnant with Miss M. When the time finally came, I discovered that, unfortunately, my fears were not unfounded.

Her birth was a very long, traumatic ordeal with several touch-and-go moments. Right after she was born, she started having significant breathing problems and ended up being whisked to the NICU.

Now, because of the care she received during my labour and delivery, and in the NICU post-birth, she's a happy and healthy six year old.

Other mothers aren't so lucky though.

I recently learned about Cuso International, a charity that sends trained Canadian medical volunteers around the world to make pregnancy and delivery safer for moms with their Maternal Health program.

Halifax is now home to Atlantic Canada's first and only buybuy BABY store (the sixth in Canada). This one-of-a-kind location opened last month with Bed, Bath and Beyond and buybuy BABY under one roof.

They invited me over to learn more about what they offer and to take a tour of the store and I was so impressed! It *almost* made me want another baby. Read on for more details.
