Halifax Gets First Girls-Only Baseball League Summer 2018

Halifax Gets First Girls-Only Baseball League Summer 2018

**PROGRAM REGISTRATION GIVEAWAY!**

When Dana Bookman's daughter was the only girl playing baseball in her league, she decided to take it into her own hands to create a team for girls. A team that had strong female baseball role models leading it, had jerseys designed to fit girls’ bodies, and even a necklace with the inspiring phrase “She believed she could so she did” on one side, and the logo on the other. The league started with the hope that five girls would come out to play baseball in the park, and within a year saw 350 girls on the roster eager to play.

This summer Dana is bringing her wildly popular all-girls baseball league (for ages 4-12)  to Halifax.

All Hail Loose Parts: Guest Post by Alex Smith of Playgroundology

All Hail Loose Parts: Guest Post by Alex Smith of Playgroundology

Our guest blogger today is Alex Smith, the founder of the CanadaPlays Association and the award winning blog PlayGroundology. Alex has been working with a small team of volunteers over the last 3 months to prepare Pop-Up Adventure Play’s visit to Halifax.

‘Loose parts’ skirt the edges of nirvana. Ask any kid. Now they probably won’t call them ‘loose parts’. They’re more likely to use the generic and all encompassing ‘stuff’ prefaced by cool, awesome, or great. It might even go the way of ‘this stuff is epic’.

Wood, rope, tarps, tires, milk crates, cardboard boxes, fabrics. PVC pipes, pallets and all manner of scrap materials can make up a loose parts inventory. Kids take them and create. They build up and pull down. They improvise, they move, groove and PLAY!

A Very Classic Halifax Summer Fun List

A Very Classic Halifax Summer Fun List

I know the official first day of summer was technically a couple weeks ago but now that school is out it feels like it finally is really summer!

Every year our family creates, what we call, our Summer Fun List, also known as a Summer Bucket List. This year we were driven by our plans for a simple, retro-inspired summer (along with a few new favourite places to visit) that also celebrates our region.

Here are thirty ideas to get started!

Simple Nature Scavenger Hunt

Simple Nature Scavenger Hunt

This Scavenger Hunt will take you less than five minutes to organize and you can do it almost anywhere which makes it a great game to play if you're trying to pass the time. It's also an excellent way to get kids active and connected with nature. All you'll need is chalk, some pavement and a wooded area.

13 Halifax Family Resource Centres

13 Halifax Family Resource Centres

If you're feeling the need to connect with other parents in person, or you need a little extra support or advice, resource centres are a valuable option in our community. The Greater Halifax region is lucky to have at least thirteen fantastic organizations that provide low cost, and often free, programming, and many have a focus on families with young children. Have you visited any of these centres?
