The Snow Family | Royale Hemlocks in Halifax

Travel is an important part of the Snow family’s life but despite all of their experiences, they’ve made a conscious choice to make Halifax their home base and raise their kids as Haligonians.

“I want my children to have many opportunities for different types of education and experiences, as well as learn to have an appreciation for the little things in life, like going to the beach or knowing your neighbour,” Laura says.

Read on for more about the community they’ve chosen to call home in this month’s Raising Haligonians.

It wasn’t just a stroke of luck that the Stevens family (parents Anitra and Jeff, seven-year-old daughter Jorja, and their Shih Tzu Zoie) ended up living in Spryfield. When they started looking for a new home, they spent a lot of time checking out all of the neighbourhoods in the Halifax region before finding the perfect one for their family.

Katie McCrossin and Zack Swick met on a sailboat so it seems only natural that they would feel drawn to ultimately raise their family by the sea. Our latest in our Raising Haligonians series features the Birch family. Paula and Chris Langille moved to Halifax for university and ended up staying here to raise their families as Haligonians: "I hope their values of kindness, politeness and of giving back to their community - whether helping a friend or neighbour or more in an organized format become a part of their being. I hope that being a Haligonian, for them, elicits a positive, fun image of who they are and what this city offers."

""I remember being outside until the sun set and it being totally normal," she says. "We wanted the same for our children." The Turlo Family shares why they chose to move back from Halifax, when they were living in Toronto, to raise their young family.

The Raising Haligonians series profiles several families across the Halifax Regional Municipality and delves into what they love about about this region and why they're choosing to raise their families here.
