Katie McCrossin and Zack Swick met on a sailboat so it seems only natural that they would feel drawn to ultimately raise their family by the sea. Katie, who grew up in Wedgewood in Halifax, met Zack, from Maine, when they were both working for an experiential education program on a boat in St.Croix, USVI. The next stop on their adventure was to travel North America and visit as many National Parks as they could.

When it came time to settle down and start a family the couple chose Halifax, with its close proximity to two of their favourite places to spend time, the ocean and the forest, to make their home.

The couple (he’s an engineer and she’s a registered nurse at the IWK) bought a home in Cresthaven Estates in 2015 and have three children. Finn is seven, Molly is three and Sawyer is almost one. They fell in love with the community near Hemlock Ravines, which is famous for its charming heart-shaped pond and pleasant winding trails.

“We loved the small neighbourhood feel, yet close access to amenities. The proximity of the Hemlock Ravines was the initial major draw as we love to be outdoors as a family,” Katie says. “The ability to walk to and from the small elementary school, through a gorgeous forest really sets and ends the school day on a positive and refreshing note. It was the childhood experience we wished for our children to have, playing in the outdoors and having adventures on the way to and from school.”

Although the proximity to Hemlock Ravines was the reason they chose the area, the real love for their area grew in the close-knit community, which even has an annual family street party each fall.

“Cresthaven is full of the type of neighbours who will shovel each other out after a snowstorm, who will drop off food after a birth or death in a family, to ones who lend and borrow the literal cup of sugar or eggs. Neighbours quickly became good friends and the "village" that is so important in raising a family,” she says. “The kind of neighbours that drop by on their way for a walk in the park to see if your family wants to join too. Neighbours that you enjoy being around enough to plan vacations away together as well!”

Katie and Zack say that, to them, raising Haligonians means, “a love for the ocean, community and the outdoors” and the hope that growing up here “will allow our children to grow to be stewards of the environment because they will have developed a love for it.”

Their passion for the natural world is evident in how they choose to spend their time together as a family. They love to explore parks and playgrounds around the region and some of their favourites include the Dingle, DeWolfe Park (for both the playground and fishing off the pier), and the Submarine Playground and the Wave on the Halifax waterfront. They’re also fans of playing in and around the water and are the happiest swimming at Crystal Crescent, surfing at Martinique and Hubbards beaches, and paddling around one of the many local lakes. They also love exploring the outdoors through camping, sailing or wiling away the day at Hubbards Farmer’s Market, browsing the stalls for fresh local food while the children make new friends in the outdoor sandbox.

In the winter the family can often be found at Martock where all but baby Sawyer are skiing after school and on weekends, or exploring and sledding in Hemlock Ravines.

Katie says they feel lucky to live in Halifax, and Cresthaven in particular, which provides them with so many opportunities to explore near and far and enjoy all of the great outdoors.

“We’re hoping to provide a simple childhood, focused on nature, the outdoors, and adventures with family and friends, rather than screens, and countless organized activities. We hope our kids will become kind and compassionate, community helpers, who bring positivity to the world around them,” she says. “We're fortunate to live so close to the sea and try to embrace all that is has to offer us. It's a wonderful place to play and adventure.”
