Raising Haligonians is a series profiling local families and why they've chosen to raise their children in the Halifax and surrounding area.
Nicole and Kevin Turlo were living in Toronto with their young family when they decided they wanted a different lifestyle for their children to grow up in. Nicole had grown up on Wedgewood in Halifax and wanted her children to have a similar experience to hers.
"I remember being outside until the sun set and it being totally normal," she says. "We wanted the same for our children. We want them to be able to have a sense of independence being outside, and to be able to explore without us worrying constantly. We are very lucky to have found a neighbourhood where this is a shared ideal."
The Turlo famliy settled in Fall River almost two years ago, in the same community that Nicole's sister and her family also live in. Nicole and Kevin have two boys, Lochlan (who is almost four years old) and Max (who is two years old) as well as their Irish Wolfhound mix pup, Griffin, who joined them six years ago from the Toronto Humane Society.
"One of the main reasons we moved to Halifax was to be close to family, but also to slow down a touch. Toronto is a wonderful city with so much to do, but we found with two small children it was just moving too fast for us," Nicole explains. "We also wanted to find a quiet street where the kids could ride their bikes and be safe doing it. Big change from where we lived in Toronto!"
They love spending time in the outdoors together and Nicole says Sundays is their family fun day when they jump in the car and find a new place to have an adventure.
"The kids are very much outdoors boys, as are we, so it's fun to hunt for new parks or beaches together," she says. "We love heading over to Shubie Park for a long walk with the dog. The off-leash area is great and the kids love all of the little bird houses. We also really enjoy both the Museum of Natural History and the Discovery Centre in the winter especially. it's a great outing and there's always something new to play with or learn about."
The Turlo family are happy with their decision to raise their family here: "We wanted to be able to enjoy the little moments with each other and not spend a whole lot of time stuck in traffic . . . Halifax is a big enough city that there is always plenty to do but it's also so easy to get away and explore."
